IFS Exam Pattern 2026 - For Prelims Exam
The UPSC IFS exam has two papers of general studies - GS papers 1 and 2. Each IFS prelims exam paper is of 200 marks. Both Prelims GS paper 1 and GS paper 2 has 200 questions each. Topics asked in the IFS prelims exam are English, General Awareness, Reasoning, Current Affairs, Polity, History, Geography and more. The duration of each IFS paper is 2 hours. Also, there is a negative marking of -1/3 for each incorrect answer in the preliminary exam as per the IFS exam pattern. The IFS 2026 prelims exam is considered qualifying in nature.

The IFS mains exam is also conducted in offline mode having six descriptive papers. The duration of each IFS mains paper is 3 hours each. There is no negative marking in the IFS main exam. Candidates qualifying for the IFS mains exam are called for the UPSC interview. The IFS interview is held in offline mode. It is of 300 marks in total.
