Now I am studying intermediate 2nd year what books i read to become an IAS officer

ADITYA KUMAR Student Expert 30th Oct, 2021

Hi

If you are still in your intermediate second year i.e in your class 12 then I won't recommend you to start your UPSC preparation right now because class 12th is very important  and in this year you need to work hard to score well in your 12th board examination so that you can get admission in a good college for your graduation. If you want to become in IAS officers then you need to clear UPSC civil services examination and to be eligible for that you need to be at least a graduate so what you can do is start your preparation for UPSC during your graduation if you can manage with it otherwise after completing your graduation.

Anyway,

If you still want to study for UPSC preparation in your to 12th itself then I would recommend you to first complete your 12th board examination syllabus and then what you can do is start with class 6th - 12th History Civics geography books .

Follow the below tips to prepare well for your UPSC  examination whenever you start your preparation ( during graduation or after it) :-

-----------) To start your preparation  first of all understand the examination pattern and go well through  syllabus :-

>>>> Examination pattern :- UPSC examination has 3 stages listed below :-

  • prelims exam :- it is objective paper and is of qualifying nature , there are 2 papers in prelims

  • Mains exam. :- it is descriptive /written examination . There are a total of 9 papers in Mains examination

  • Interview :- After qualifying mains, you have to go through interview round, and it is more of test of your personality rather than knowledge.

To know exam pattern in detail visit :- https://competition.careers360.com/articles/upsc

>>>> syllabus :- In prelims, your paper 1 general studies  1 in which  you have History, Indian Polity, Geography, Environment, Current Affairs, Science and technology, etc. Your paper 2 in prelims is general studies II or CSAT in which you have reasoning, Maths, English, Hindi, etc. Similarly, you can check the complete syllabus of both prelims and mains at

- ---------) Discipline is the key to crack UPSC, so you need to make a routine/ time table and follow it .

----------)Read newspaper like the Hindu or Indian Express  and magazines like Yojana, Kurukshetra, Economic and Political Weekly  to keep yourself updated with the current events and issues.

----------) take short breaks in between your studies, studying continuously can be brain tiring and it becomes difficult to focus and study with concentration, so take breaks to relax and refresh your brain otherwise you won't be able to retain whatever you read.

-----------)Choose your optional subject wisely , choose the subject you have interest in.

----------)Make short notes for each subject, these will be your life saviour and will help you in your revisions a lot as syllabus is wide

----------)Set daily goals like I have to cover these many topics today, weekly goals like I have to  cover these chapters this week and practice their questions too, by the end of this week and similarly set monthly goals to cover the syllabus and meet them without any fail.

----------)Revise :- there's no point of preparing for the exam if you couldn't recall anything in the UPSC Examination so you should stress on revision as well.

----------) Your mains examination is in written, so you need to work your speed and also work on improving how to present the knowledge you have on paper, so answer writing practicing should be your priority

----------)Solve previous year question papers and mock test papers ;- You should solve these , it will give you idea of types of questions asked and their difficulty level and will help you a lot.

----------)Also work on your communication skills and personality development as it plays an important role in your interview round.

Hello aspirant.

Hope you are doing well in your life. See for the preparation of upsc you don't need to have something any specific graduation or specific subject. For upsc you can choose any subject according to your preference and can give exam according to that only.

For ease many people choose bachelor in humanities subject as it coincide with most of the upsc syllabus. But you can do your graduation from any stream in which you feel good.

Best of luck!

Good luck!

pdwords Student Expert 21st Oct, 2021
Hello, .

In order to initiate your preparation, the first and most important step is to be well acquainted with UPSC Syllabus , learn it by heart as this will enable you to know what to read and what to skip.

As per the recent trends UPSC is framing Prelims questions also based on Mains syllabus, so have an integrated approach, don't segrete the preparation part thinking once you qualify Prelims you'll prepare for Mains that doesn't work.

To cover such a humongous syllabus you will have to make a timetable,set targets on a daily,weekly and monthly basis,that's the only way to complete this extensive syllabus.

Newspaper reading is equally vital part of preparation, you can start with any newspaper like The Hindu, or Indian Express on a regular basis to be updated as well as gaining knowledge which shall be highly useful to you in future exam preparation part. Put a more emphasis on editorial part, it will not only broaden your perspective but help a lot in answer writing,and make sure whatever opinion you form it should be well balanced. You can also make notes of this,it'll be very useful in answer writing.

When it comes to reading books ,start with basics, for each subject, you can do with NCERTs for this. This will build your foundation strong,as you progress, move on to other relevant books as mentioned below;

For Prelims, you can refer the following books:

History ;

NCERT Class XI and XII
India's Struggle for Independence by Bipin Chandra
For Indian Culture, refer art and culture by Nitin Singhania

Geography ;

NCERT Class VI to XII
GC Leong's Physical Geography
World Atlas

Economics ;

NCERT Class XI
Indian Economy by Ramesh Singh

International Relations & Polity ;

NCERT XII Political Science with current affairs
Indian Polity by Laxmikanth

CSAT ;

Verbal and Non-Verbal Reasoning by RS Agarwal
M Tyra's Quicker Maths

Coming to Mains Exam, you can refer the following books for four General Studies Paper;

GS I - For History , Class XI NCERT book with India's struggle for Independence by Bipin Chandra,India after Independence by Bipan Chandra,History of Medieval India by Satish Chandra. For Geography refer World Geography and Geography of India by Majid Hussain, GC Leong's Physical and Human Geography with NCERT Class XI book.
For GS II - Polity and International Relations , refer Indian Polity by Lamikanth,India's Foreign Policy by Rajiv Sikri
For GS III - For Economics refer Indian Economy by Ramesh Singh, read ARC report along with Economic Survey and Fiscal Budget.
For GS IV - For Ethics refer a book named Lexicon by Niraj Kumar, also you can go through study material of IGNOU.

Remember to keep your resources minimal, read one book many a times instead of many a book one time, as you have to retain so much of information so rely on only limited yet trustworthy resources and revision is the only key for remembrance.

Writing mains is a huge task, for nine paper it requires immense practice along with knowledge. So, you have to start practicing answer writing in advance, even in a little way, There are many sites which provide questions on daily basis you can avail that. Try to give a holistic viewpoint while answer writing by providing political,economical and social aspect. You can get topper's answer sheet from various sites, try to analyze and study them minutely, you'll get an ideas about what to write, how to express and present viewpoint in organized manner.

Practice previous year question paper which you can get from the site of UPSC, in addition mock papers, and test series which you can get it from any of the sites exclusively dedicated to UPSC, all these will help in scaling up your entire preparation level.

Hello,

Kindly post your query in English language instead of posting it in your regional language as the probability of answer and information you seek on your query becomes very low when you post it in your regional language. From your query the only thing I can understand is you wish to know something about IAS examination. It would be helpful if you can be more specific about the thing you wish to know about and kindly post it in English language.

Thank you
