ADITYA KUMAR Student Expert 22nd May, 2022

Hi

Your profile suggests that your qualification is 10th.

You can choose any of science ,commerce or arts stream based on your interest after your 10th for your 10 +2 and then for graduation if you want to become an IAS officer.

This is because,

to become an IAS officer you need to clear UPSC civil services examination and to be eligible for UPSC  examination there is no compulsion to have done 10+2 in a particular stream , also there's no compulsion to be a graduate in a particular subject. You can be a graduate in any discipline.

For your reference,

UPSC eligibility  criteria is provided below:-

*************  You  must  have  a  bachelor's  degree in any, discipline    from a  recognised university  .

*************  Minimum  age  limit :-  you  need to  be at least  21  years  old   to be  eligible as on 1st of August of the year of filling the form

*************  Maximum  age  limit :-  32 years , also there's 3  year  relaxation on upper age limit for  obc and of  5 years  for sc/st category as on 1st August of the year of examination

************* Attempt limit:- The maximum of times one can appear in UPSC is given below category wise :-

  • OBC or  General PwD - 9

  • SC/ ST - No limit ,   can appear till upper age limit .

You can check detailed eligibility at :- https://competition.careers360.com/articles/upsc-ias-eligibility-criteria

But yes,

choosing Arts or the humanities in your 10+2 and graduation can be really helpful for your UPSC  examination, this is because in Arts you will be learning subjects like history , polity etc which are a part of the UPSC syllabus so it will help you in your upsc examination.

So, take your time and decide .

Coming to college/school

You can choose any recognised school/college for 10+2 and then for graduation depending upon the course you opt for.

To help you further, here's a brief of your UPSC examination pattern

Your UPSC civil services examination consists of three stages

********prelims exam :- it is objective paper and is of qualifying nature , so you just  need to at least qualify it to be eligible for mains examination, the score /marks obtained by you in your prelims examination is not added up or used in your final merit. Your prelims exam consist of 2 papers: -

-----) general studies  1

-----) general studies II ( csat )

You get 2 hours for each paper

********Mains exam. :- it is descriptive /written examination . There are a total of 9 papers  which are listed below:-

-----) compulsory indian language.

-----) english

-----) essay

-----) general studies I

-----) general studies II

-----) general studies III

-----) general studies IV

-----) optional I

-----) optional II

The compulsory indian language and english are qualifying in nature . You just need to qualify them. The marks obtained by you in these two papers will not be counted towards merit list.

*********Interview :- After qualifying mains, you have to go through interview round, and it is more of test of your personality rather than knowledge.

I got 40% in graduation. Am i eligible for IAS and IPS post in UPSC and likewise DC & DySP post in MPSC....A friend of mine told me that you can appear for both the exams but youre not eligible for this posts cauz they have special criteria of having 55% in your graduation. Is it true?

Subhalaxmi Biswal 27th May, 2022

Hello Aspirant,

Both these exams do not consider the graduation percentage. So, you are eligible for both these exams.

Your score in graduation degree is not remarkably positive if you wish to become an IAS officer.

But allow me to explain that it is not the end.

Marks achieved in an exam don't certainly indicate one's abilities and incapabilities.

It only indicates your result and productivity level at that provided period which might have been adversely affected by a combination of aspects.

But you need to have your subject knowledge.

Begin going over your graduation books as the interview council will inquire about your fundamental understanding of the graduation subject.

So marks of graduation are not significant but the subject insight of graduation subject is significant.

piyush singh 15th May, 2022

Hello Aspirant ,

It is very good to decide your aim this early in your life as it will give your enough time to prepare for UPSC CSE examination ,if you are thinking about starting your preparation  after completing your class 12/from the first semester of your college you should start with basic NCERTs book of class 6-12 and give it proper 1.5 to 2 years as they are the base for your UPSC preparation and then from the 4 semester you should move on to other books like Laksmikant , Spectrum etc you should also start News paper reading .

You should start answer writing practice from the beginning of third year and then solve PYQs from 4th year .

Anushri Varshney 15th May, 2022

Hi Koena,

Greetings of the day!

The most important thing to understand is whether you are interested or not. Studying for getting good results will motivate the individual but the procedure is somehow difficult for many. So I would suggest you follow these steps for acing the exam.

  • Make a fixed timetable with all standard books required for UPSC.
  • Stick to the timetable and follow by heart.
  • Daily read newspapers and practise various types of questions for a better understanding of concepts.
  • Read the topics daily in the morning Jn which you are lagging.
  • Strengthen your foundation and write the answers with accuracy and good handwriting.
  • Solve the questions within the time limit as it will help you in competing in the examination.
  • Study daily for 7-8 hours and gradually increase when the examination is near.

Motivate yourself and Practice meditation. Also, eat healthy to stay fit and fine.

Hope his help.

Wishing you very good luck :)

Hello aspirant?

Quite an odd question but there’s no limits to curiosity!

In fact, the car provided to them for their post is only and only meant for official work and not personal indulgences.
