Is ias exam objective or subjective type ? How to prepare for it?

Smeet Almeida 8th May, 2020

IAS examinations can be divided into three parts:-

  • IAS preliminary : This is the first stage of the tests consisting of two papers and a total of 400 marks. These are objective in nature and an aspirant should score a minimum of 33% in paper-II (CSAT) in order to qualify for the next round.
  • IAS main: This is the second stage and consists of 9 papers. 2 of these are languages (One English and one aspirant's choice) papers and are of qualification nature. The remaining 7 are of merit nature and consist of both subjective and objective questions. The total score of the aspirant in papers and interview rounds is used during ranking process.
  • IAS Personality : This is the final stage and consists of a 275 marks interview. It consists of a psychometric test, an assessment test and a personal interview. The score in this interview and previous test is used to declare the final results.

which stream to choose in class 11to become an IAS

ADITYA KUMAR Student Expert 8th May, 2020
Hi Ashlesha

You can choose any stream of your choice depending upon your interest in your 10+2 and graduation.
This is because ,
There is no compulsion to be a graduate in a particular subject, all you need to be eligible for UPSC is that you should be a graduate in any discipline

Thus, you can choose any stream of your interest in your class 11th, but yes if you are interested in Arts/Humanities then choosing Arts or the humanities as your stream will be a good choice for your UPSC or the IAS examination, as in Arts you will be learning subjects like history , polity etc which are a part of the UPSC syllabus so it will help you in your upsc examination.

Thankyou

Let me clear you, IAS is not a degree it is just a job, a Government job. IAS, Indian Administrative Service is a type of job which you can get after Clearing UPSC cse. Cadre will depend upon your rank or sometimes the vacancy of that particular place which you will apply.

Coming to the degree then you can take up any degrre as it you need just a Under grad. degree as a Pre requisite.

Just join any colleges nearby your home. I would suggest you to go for BA in Political Science or History or Geography.

which course is better for ias?

pdwords Student Expert 5th May, 2020
Hello,

The eligibility for UPSC is passed graduation in any discipline from a recognized university, you need to be 21 years old and you can apply even in the final year of graduation.

To answer your question,there's no such thing as best option when it comes to course selection,this is the very reason UPSC allows candidates from all stream to apply with no minimum aggregate.

UPSC is more humanities oriented, so if you have inclination towards this field,you can go for graduation in any such subject such as Political Science,Economics or even law etc. The thing about humanities students are they're already well acquainted with a large portion of UPSC syllabus which science students aren't. But, this in no way mean that other stream students don't qualify, according to previous year trends even science,engineering,medical backgrounds have qualified.

It depends to a large extent your aspirations, and considering UPSC as such a competitive exam, it's good to have a back up plan,there are many candidates who have earned experience in their domain of work and thereafter appeared and qualified UPSC.

What are some strategies to clear UPSC exam having 4years in hand? What is the rank required for General category to become IAS/IPS/IFS?Is coaching must? What are some important books to crack UPSC?

pdwords Student Expert 4th May, 2020

Hello,

UPSC Civil Service Exam consists of three stages namely;

  • Preliminary
  • Mains
  • Interview

To give you a brief about the exam;

Preliminary consists of 200 Marks for each paper.It mainly consists of GS Paper-I consists of the following topic such as

History of India and Indian national movement, Indian and World geography, Economic and social development- sustainable development, poverty,inclusion demographics, social sector initiatives etc,Indian polity and governance-constitution,political system,Current Events nationally and Internationally, General Science,General Issues on environmental ecology,biodiversity and climate change.

You just need to score the required cut offs against your category.

And then we have qualifying CSAT (you need to score 33%) which includes topics such as basic numeracy, comprehension, logical reasoning and analytical ability, general mental ability, decision making and problem solving, interpersonal skills including communication skills. Both consists of 200 marks, MCQs based. Prelims is mcq based, but still it requires knowledge coupled with speed in order to ace it, it's numbers are not added in the final list,

Coming to Mains it's more of a subjective type, one needs to write answer for Four General Studies Paper such as

  • GS-I includes Indian Heritage and Culture,History and Geography of the World and Society,
  • GS-II includes Governance, Constitution, Polity, Social Justice and International Relations,
  • GS-III includes Technology, Economic Development, Bio-Diversity, Environment, Security and Disaster Management,
  • GS-IV includes Ethics, Integrity, and Aptitude),
  • Two Optionals, One Essay, two language paper,

There are total nine papers here. 250 marks for each paper, total is 1750 marks followed by Personality Test of 275 marks.

The first and most important step towards preparation is to be well acquainted with UPSC Syllabus , learn it by heart, that's the most crucial step to crack this exam, to know what to read and what to skip. In addition to this, never ever make a differentiation between prelims and mains, because nowadays what's happening is even in prelims, UPSC frame questions based on Mains syllabus, So, the first towards preparation shall be an integrated approach for both.

Make a timetable,set targets on a daily,weekly and monthly basis,that's the only way to complete this extensive syllabus.

Another equally important part is to read any newspaper like The Hindu, or Indian Express on a regular basis to be updated as well as gaining knowledge which shall be highly useful to you in future exam preparation part. Put a more emphasis on editorial part, it will not only broaden your perspective but help a lot in answer writing,and make sure whatever opinion you form it should be well balanced.

When it comes to reading books ,start with basics, for each subject, you can do with NCERTs for this. This will build your foundation strong,as you progress, move on to other relevant books as mentioned below;

For Prelims, refer the following books:

History ;

  • NCERT Class XI and XII
  • India's Struggle for Independence by Bipin Chandra
  • For Indian Culture, refer art and culture by Nitin Singhania

Geography ;

  • NCERT Class VI to XII
  • GC Leong's Physical Geography
  • World Atlas

Economics ;

  • NCERT Class XI
  • Indian Economy by Ramesh Singh

International Relations & Polity;

  • NCERT XII Political Science with current affairs
  • Indian Polity by Laxmikanth

CSAT ;

  • Verbal and Non-Verbal Reasoning by RS Agarwal
  • M Tyra's Quicker Maths

Coming to Mains Exam, you can refer the following books for four General Studies Paper;

GS I - For history , Class XI NCERT book with India's struggle for Independence by Bipin Chandra,India after Independence by Bipan Chandra,History of  Medieval India by Satish Chandra

For Geography refer World Geography and Geography of India by Majid Hussain, GC Leong's Physical and Human Geography with NCERT Class XI book.

For GS II - Polity and International Relations , refer Indian Polity by Lamikanth,India's Foreign Policy by Rajiv Sikri

For GS III -  For Economics refer Indian Economy by Ramesh Singh, read ARC report along with Economic Survey and Fiscal Budget.

For GS IV - For Ethics refer a book named Lexicon by Niraj Kumar, also you can go through study material of IGNOU.

Always keep resources minimal, read one book many a times instead of many a book one time

Start practicing answer writing in advance, even in a little way, writing mains is a huge task for nine paper, it requires immense practice along with knowledge. There are many sites which provide questions on daily basis you can find that very useful.

Practice previous year question paper which you can get from the site of UPSC,in addition mock papers, and test series which you can get it from any of the sites extensively dedicated to UPSC, , it's highly important to evaluate your performance while doing so.

In 2018, last rank for IAS was 92, for IFS was 134, and for IPS was 236 for General Category .

rehan18alam Student Expert 2nd May, 2020

DEAR aspirant,

To understand any language the most important thing you should do is read in that language.

YOu should start with simple books like three men and a boat, harry potter, or Chetan Bhagat books. Make a habit of reading books. Use dictionary whenever you get struck.

THe other thing you should do is read newspaper like THE HINDU, INDIAN EXPRESS, etc. This will help you in both understanding the language and make your language good.

THe other important activity you must do is write the summary of the books you read in about 1000 words. Try to summarise the news articles in simple bullete points.

Hope this helps. THank you.

If a Surgeon after completing MBBS and MS, if he/she writes UPSC exam, What kind of job will they get and What will be their Salary?

pdwords Student Expert 1st May, 2020
Hello,
See,eligibility for UPSC is based on graduation and candidates from all background can apply here,there's not even specific aggregate requirement here, so whether you've done MBBS, MD or even higher studies, if you qualify prelims,mains and interview which are the three stages of examination and joins the probation period for a duration of two year,you still have to start your journey as SDM which is Sub Divisional Magistrate if you qualify for IAS, and it doesn't matter who possess the highest qualifications, it's not going to change,yes the ranks will decide as the top posts goes to IAS only and then IPS, so on and so forth. But, the recruitment process is more based on how you fare in the exam, and ranks you get eventually.
