Suggest me how to read the Hindu newspaper (which portions) for upsc cse?

pdwords Student Expert 1st Jul, 2019
Hello,
Firstly, to know which portion to read, you need to memorize keywords of UPSC syllabus, that's highly important because in this way you'll get acquainted with not only what to read but also what not to read.
Secondly, going through previous year questions will give you a basic idea about types of questions coming in exam, accordingly you'll grasp important contents of The Hindu.
"Always focus on issues rather than news along with what and why of events"
Now coming to what all to read-
First page usually provides headlines, just skim through it. You just need to be well aware of happenings.
Editorial is the most important part, do not skip it ever. It's a high yielding area in terms of making notes for UPSC. Reading this regularly will not only enhance your knowledge and perspective, but it'll be a great value for answer writing as well.
There are two on the left margin, along with LEAD. There is OP-Ed(Hindu Comment), it is usually written in prose form and expresses opinion of author, you can read letters to editor only if you get time, the good thing about this is getting to know different viewpoints and the benefit you'll get is to anaylze it objectively and use in answer writing.
Political issues are significant to focus on than political news, all the areas related to development, issues related to Indian Constitution, Administration.
In Business page, focus on socio-economic isssues and economic growth along with monetary and fiscal policy(basically all those areas relevant to syllabus of exams and Indian Economy)
Some important topics are verdicts of High Court and Supreme Court, national and international issues, government policies and schemes, parliamentary debates, science and technology,
Some Special Mentions-
  • Tuesday Edition of open page, has editorial in analysis form, helps to develop viewpoint
  • Thursday edition of special page on science and technology,
  • Friday edition of art and culture section

Things to skip-
Sports, Awards, Local and Political News(just have a basic idea of happenings), deaths etc.
Hope, this helps.

How many attempts are offered to upsc cse under EWS cotegory? Tell me age limit also

Sourav Sarkar Student Expert 17th Jun, 2019

Hi dear,

Hope you are doing well!

Now let's go through your question.

According to the news that once the new quota bill for Economically Weaker Sections (EWS) comes into effect, there is every chance that more attempts would be given for General Category Candidates in UPSC Civil Services Exam.

However, as of now, no such steps are taken by the (NDA) government.

Minimum age :

The minimum age to appear for IAS Exam is 21 years. This means that the you must have at least 21 years of age on 1st August of that given year when the exam is held. For example, if you are appearing for 2019 prelims, you should be above 21 years of age by Aug 1, 2019.

Upper age limit:

A general category candidate has an age limit of 32 years, but that doesn’t mean that he can write this exam as many times as he wishes. There are some restrictions on the number of times this exam can be taken, which again is different for different categories.

The number of attempts for IAS exam are as follows:

  • General Category: 6 attempts till 32 years of age.
  • Upper age limit for OBC: 9 attempts till 35 years.
  • Upper age limit for SC/ST: unlimited attempts till 37 Years.
  • Upper age limit for Defense Services personnel disabled in operations during hostilities with any foreign country or in a disturbed area and released as a consequence thereof: 35 years.
  • Upper age limit for Ex-servicemen including Commissioned Officers and ECOs/SSCOs who have rendered at least five years Military Service: 37 years.
  • Upper age limit for blind, deaf-mute and Orthopaedically handicapped persons (general category): 9 attempts till 42 years.

Thank You & All the best!

Hello Jyoti,

Yes, BA is very beneficial if you want to prepare for IAS while graduation. Through BA you already have a grasp on general studies and most of the subject realted to UPSC syllabus. BA is the plus point for improved GS and Optional subjects. Also, BA is generally easier as compared to any other option so its less time consuming and you can focus on the preparations.

I want want to become a ias officer after b.tech in cs

Santwana J Singh Student Expert 15th Jun, 2019

Hello Kamal!

That is a very good option!

For becoming an IAS officer after CSE you have to appear in UPSC civil services exam after completing your degree. It will be better if you grasp your course very well around those 4 years so that the papers related to your course will become easier to clear.

Now you can take a drop as well for your preparation or you can prepare from beginning of your degree or during final year of your b.tech for other paper of Civil Services exam like Aptitude and reasoning.

Make sure to don't harm your subject studies during your degree.

All the best!
