Hello,

You can choose any subjects of your choice, it's not in anyway going to impact your chances for appearing in UPSC,the reason being UPSC doesn't discriminate among aspirants and hence allow people from all background to appear for this exam, you just need to be 21 years old and passed graduation in any discipline from a recognized university, you can apply even in your final year.

UPSC Civil Service Exam consists of three level-

Preliminary
Mains
Interview

Preliminary numbers are not added in the final list, you just need to score the required cut offs against your category. It mainly consists of GS Paper-I consists of the following topic such as History of India and Indian national movement, Indian and World geography, Economic and social development- sustainable development, poverty, inclusion demographics, social sector initiatives etc,Indian polity and governance-constitution,political system,Current Events nationally and Internationally,
General Science,General Issues on environmental ecology, biodiversity and climate change.

and CSAT includes topics such as basic numeracy, comprehension, logical reasoning and analytical ability, general mental ability, decision making and problem solving, interpersonal skills including communication skills. Both consists of 200 marks, MCQs based. Prelims is mcq based, but still it requires knowledge coupled with speed.

Mains is more of a subjective type, one needs to write answer for Four General Studies Paper(GS-I includes Indian Heritage and Culture,History and Geography of the World and Society, GS-II includes Governance, Constitution, Polity, Social Justice and International Relations, GS-III includes Technology, Economic Development, Bio-Diversity, Environment, Security and Disaster Management, GS-IV includes Ethics, Integrity, and Aptitude),Two Optionals, One Essay, two language paper, there are total nine papers here. 250 marks for each paper, total is 1750 marks followed by Personality Test of 275 marks.

The biggest advantage you've right now is time, and if you use it wisely, you'll succeed in your very first attempt. You can go through the gradual steps as mentioned below in order to start your preparation for UPSC:

Be well acquainted with UPSC Syllabus, learn it by heart, that's the most crucial step to crack this exam, to know what to read and what to skip. In addition to this, never ever make a differentiation between prelims and mains, what I mean is do not prepare separately for each, because nowadays what's happening is even in prelims, UPSC frame questions based on Mains syllabus, So, the first towards preparation shall be a combined preparation for both.

Read any newspaper like The Hindu, or Indian Express on a regular basis to be updated as well as gaining knowledge which shall be highly useful to you in future exam preparation part.

Start with basics, for each subject, you can do with NCERTs for this.

As you progress, move on to other relevant books, keep your resources minimum like Polity by Laxmikanth, History of Modern India by Bipin Chandra etc.

Start practicing answer writing in advance, even in a little way, writing mains is a huge task for nine paper, it requires immense practice along with knowledge.

Practice previous year question paper which you can get from the site of UPSC,in addition mock papers, and test series which you can get it from any of the sites extensively dedicated to UPSC, , it's highly important to evaluate your performance while doing so.

Hello,

You should choose your career based on your interest, long term vision. Whatever you choose law or engineering, you'll be able to appear for UPSC later on. It's just that if you're pretty sure about going for UPSC in coming year, having law as a course of study will help you better as UPSC is more humanities oriented, not that having an engineering degree won't it's just that for science students extra efforts go in starting afresh.

Coming to eligibility for UPSC;You just need to be 21 years old having completed graduation in any discipline from a recognized university. You can apply for UPSC even in final year. UPSC doesn't discriminate amidst aspirants belonging to different discipline, people from different backgrounds are allowed to appear for the exam. The biggest advantage you have right now is ample amount of time and if you use it wisely, you can succeed in your first attempt only.

please tell me if i crack upsc and i get post of ias officer then can i get chance to studying abroad .if yes then give me detail information.

Aryan 21st Mar, 2020

Hi Sakshi,
First of all it really makes me feel proud that you are inclined towards UPSC and foreign education as well, that is you want to serve the society and the country by your knowledge and dedication.
Coming over to your question , Yes you do have a chance to study abroad if you become an IAS Officer but there are certain conditions:

1. You will be getting 2 years paid leave.
2. You should have completed at least nine years of service (six years for officers of the North-East cadre).
3. Universities like Harvard , Princeton provide special courses for the IAS.
4. You will also be provided a handsome amount of stipend and sometimes even the government funds your entire further education.

Feel free to ask any further queries, I will be glad to answer those.

which course is best for IAS ?

pdwords Student Expert 11th Mar, 2020

Hello,

You just need to be 21 years old having completed graduation in any discipline from a recognized university. You can apply for UPSC even in final year. UPSC doesn't discriminate amidst aspirants belonging to different discipline, people from different backgrounds have cracked this exam and continue to do so, eventually it's the preparation and strategy that matters.

You can also go through UPSC syllabus in order to choose your subject in graduation, if you're inclined towards humanities subject like economics, political science, geography etc, you can pursue the graduation in the same. In this way, you'll also find it easier when it comes to your optional paper in UPSC. But, inspite of the fact that UPSC is humanities oriented, people from different background have cracked this exam, and continue to do so, extra efforts for people beloning to background other than humanities lies in the fact that they've not studied usually humanities subject in their 10+2/graduation level but then that should't anyway discourage, as I said people from different background have succeeded in this exam.

I become ias officer which course is best in college?

Shaurya Kapoor 10th Mar, 2020

It is the important decision to make the career path better. But, this decision will not decide your selection chances in Civil Services. As per my knowledge and experience, following things can be considered to choose the degree.

  • Your genuine interest in a particular stream or field.
  • The scope of that field.
  • Helpful for your plan B i.e. job security to live financial stable.
  • While choosing optional subjects for CSE, you can choose the graduation subject as well.

I will personally suggest you, don’t compromise your interest for this exam. It will definitely bring you down . Everyone knows that our background knowledge is utmost important.

Some peoples argue that doctor’s and engineer’s success rate is higher in the Civil Services. But, no one knows the actual reason behind it. They are cracking the CSE because they have the habit of study for long hours and they are already good at retaining the things faster.

Every degree has its own advantages and disadvantages. I have summarized it below, from my experiences.

Case - I: If you are going to choose humanities ( BA )

  • The syllabus is almost same .
  • You will feel confident while studying for CSE.
  • It will help you to direct in CSE.
  • But, this field has less scope .

Case - II: If you are going to choose the Professional courses ( B.Com (http://b.com/) , BBA, etc.)

  • Job Security chances are good enough.
  • You will gain practical knowledge .
  • But, not very helpful for CSE.

Case - III: If you are going to choose science ( B.Sc (http://b.sc/) , MBBS, Engg, etc.)

  • Opportunities in Research and Development Fields.
  • Job Security.
  • It is helpful for CSE as well.

Availability of quality books , study material and proper guidance, the study environment around you, and your commitment is matters a lot. So, don’t be confused. Give your enough time to prepare then such questions will not arise in your mind.

No matter what you do you have to study for the UPSC syllabus.

Best Of luck!!!!!!!
