what are the subject will required for IAS exam after 12th

ADITYA KUMAR Student Expert 14th Jan, 2021

Hi

When it comes to which subject you should choose after your 12th  for graduation, to be eligible for UPSC civil services examination
then
You can choose any subject or course  of your choice based on your interest for your graduation

This is because,

to be eligible for UPSC  examination there is no compulsion to be a graduate in a particular subject, all you need to be eligible is that you should be a graduate in any discipline

So you can choose any stream of your interest, but yes if you choose BA or Arts
then
choosing Arts or the humanities can be really helpful for your UPSC  examination, this is because in Arts you will be learning subjects like history , polity etc which are a part of the UPSC syllabus so it will help you in your upsc examination

UPSC syllabus includes History, Indian Art & Culture , Polity, Geography , Economics, Environment , International Relations etc.

You  can check the complete syllabus at

how can i prepare IPS/IAS ??please help

pdwords Student Expert 13th Jan, 2021

Hello, .

UPSC Civil Service Exam consists of three stages-

Preliminary : This is the first Stage , MCQs based exam, it has two papers and each one consists of 200 marks,its numbers ain't added to final list, you just need to score the required cut offs against your category. First is GS Paper-I which consists of the following topic such as History of India and Indian national movement, Indian and World geography, Economic and social development- sustainable development, poverty, inclusion demographics, social sector initiatives etc,Indian polity and governance-constitution,political system,Current Events nationally and Internationally, General Science,General Issues on environmental ecology,biodiversity and climate change. you just need to score the required cut offs against your category. Second Paper is CSAT which is qualifying by nature,you need to score merely 33% which is 66 marks out of 200, it includes following topics such as basic numeracy, comprehension, logical reasoning and analytical ability, general mental ability, decision making and problem solving, interpersonal skills including communication skills.

Mains : This is a second stage which it's more of a subjective type, you are required to write answers for Four General Studies Paper such as

  • GS-I includes Indian Heritage and Culture,History and Geography of the World and Society,
  • GS-II includes Governance, Constitution, Polity, Social Justice and International Relations,
  • GS-III includes Technology, Economic Development, Bio-Diversity, Environment, Security and Disaster Management,
  • GS-IV includes Ethics, Integrity, and Aptitude
  • Two Optionals,
  • One Essay,
  • Two Language Paper

In total there are nine papers in Mains, and each paper is of 250 marks, total adds up to 1750 marks.

Interview : The two stages are further followed by personality test of 275 marks.

In order to initiate your preparation, the first and most important step is to be well acquainted with UPSC Syllabus , learn it by heart as this will enable you to know what to read and what to skip.

As per the recent trends UPSC is framing Prelims questions also based on Mains syllabus, so have an integrated approach for Prelims and Mains .

To cover such a humongous syllabus you will have to make a timetable, set targets on a daily,weekly and monthly basis , that's the only way to complete this extensive syllabus

Newspaper reading is equally essentially part of preparation, you can start with any newspaper like The Hindu, or Indian Express on a regular basis to be updated as well as gaining knowledge which shall be highly useful to you in future exam preparation part. Put a more emphasis on editorial part, it will not only broaden your perspective but help a lot in answer writing, and make sure whatever opinion you form it should be well balanced. You can also make notes of this, it'll be very useful in answer writing.

When it comes to reading books ,start with basics, for each subject, you can do with NCERTs for this. This will build your foundation strong,as you progress, move on to other relevant books as mentioned below;

For Prelims, you can refer the following books:

History ;

  • NCERT Class XI and XII
  • India's Struggle for Independence by Bipin Chandra
  • For Indian Culture, refer art and culture by Nitin Singhania

Geography ;

  • NCERT Class VI to XII
  • GC Leong's Physical Geography
  • World Atlas

Economics ;

  • NCERT Class XI
  • Indian Economy by Ramesh Singh

International Relations & Polity ;

  • NCERT XII Political Science with current affairs
  • Indian Polity by Laxmikanth

CSAT ;

  • Verbal and Non-Verbal Reasoning by RS Agarwal
  • M Tyra's Quicker Maths

Coming to Mains Exam, you can refer the following books for four General Studies Paper;

GS I - For History , Class XI NCERT book with India's struggle for Independence by Bipin Chandra,India after Independence by Bipan Chandra,History of Medieval India by Satish Chandra

For Geography refer World Geography and Geography of India by Majid Hussain, GC Leong's Physical and Human Geography with NCERT Class XI book.

For GS II - Polity and International Relations , refer Indian Polity by Lamikanth,India's Foreign Policy by Rajiv Sikri

For GS III - For Economics refer Indian Economy by Ramesh Singh, read ARC report along with Economic Survey and Fiscal Budget .

For GS IV - For Ethics refer a book named Lexicon by Niraj Kumar , also you can go through study material of IGNOU.

Remember to keep your resources minimal, read one book many a times instead of many a book one time, as you have to retain so much of information so rely on only limited yet trustworthy resources and revision is the only key for remembrance.

Writing mains is a huge task, for nine paper it requires immense practice along with knowledge. So, you have to start practicing answer writing in advance, even in a little way, There are many sites which provide questions on daily basis you can avail that. Try to give a holistic viewpoint while answer writing by providing political,economical and social aspect. You can get topper's answer sheet from various sites, try to analyze and study them minutely, you'll get an ideas about what to write, how to express and present viewpoint in organized manner.

Practice previous year question paper which you can get from the site of UPSC,in addition mock papers, and test series which you can get it from any of the sites exclusively dedicated to UPSC, it's highly important to evaluate your performance while doing so.

One of the key thing which is important in cracking UPSC is you need to have the understanding of the basics pretty strong, what I meant you don't have to be an expert but you surely need to have the base/foundation strong in each subject, hence the importance is often emphasized on going with NCERTs first as this will make the base strong, and as I said keep resources limited whatever you choose.

* Vision IAS  has already been there for long in the field of coaching for UPSC preparation ,byju's is comparatively new and they are  still improving .

* Selection ratio : - byju's is no where in terms of selection ratio when it is compared with Vision IAS .Vision IAS has also produced many toprankers over the  years

my name is Vijay Gupta I am studying in 11th standard with subject science I am interested in in Civil Service exam category IAS which subject should I take after completing 12th standard

chinchujoseph1993 5th Jan, 2021

Hello,

To become an IAS officer there is no single course that you have to do. The eligibility criteria states that the Candidate must hold a graduation degree in any discipline from a reputed university. After this you need to qualify the Union Public Service Commission Civil Services Exam. The exam itself is structured into three parts – the Preliminary (Civil Services Aptitude Test – CSAT), Main Exam, and finally the Interview.

So first complete your graduation and in the meantime read more about the eligibilty criteria like the number of attempts, age limit, etc.

I  have shared a link with you below where you can read about the eligibility criteria: https://competition.careers360.com/articles/upsc-ias-eligibility-criteria#IAS-Eligibility-Criteria-2021--Educational-Qualification

Inculcate the habit of reading the daily newspaper and keep yourself aware of  latest happenings in the country and the world.

Work on your interpersonal skills and communication skills. Your personality is tested during the interview.

Good Luck

My sister is in 7th std and she want to be an IAS officer. She is very good in Maths. How can we start preparing her for UPSC Exam from now?

Anurag Khanna 2nd Jan, 2021

Hello Aspirant,

See it is to early to make your sister prepare for UPSC Civil Services examination, it is the good thing that she dreams to be an IAS officer but everything has certain time period to start or end and if she is in class 7th then let her play and enjoy her life according to her point of view. I am saying this because the preparation of UPSC Civil Services Examination is not a tad easy task but yes if she wants to be an IAS officer then I would recommend you to make him fully aware of the happenings in her surroundings and apart from this she should have proper command on the Social Science subject from class 11th to class 12th. She should also develop the proper habit of newspaper reading and if the newspaper would be in English language then it is much better but if it is in any other language then also it is ok but she should have proper knowledge on current affairs which can only be developed by the reading of newspapers and magazines. So for now this much tasks will be best for her step towards the preparation of UPSC Civil Services examination.
