In order to understand how to become an IAS, you need to understand about the UPSC Civil Services Examination. UPSC on Union Public Service Commission is the body responsible for conducting the Civil Services Examination.

For UPSC Civil Services, candidates must be an Indian Citizen who has completed his or her graduation (any course) from a recognized university in the country and is between the age group of 21 to 32 years. The age is calculated as on 31 August of the year of notification. Also, upper age limit is relaxed as per the government rules for reserved categories.

The exam itself is structured into three parts – the Preliminary (Civil Services Aptitude Test – CSAT), Main Exam, and finally the Interview.

Inculcate the habit of reading the daily newspaper and keep yourself aware of  latest happenings in the country and the world and note them down in a small diary.

Work on your interpersonal skills and communication skills. Your personality is tested during the interview.

Also NCERT books specially 9th and 10th are very important for your preparation, so study those really well.

Once you finish your 12th, then when you are doing your degree you can also take some online coaching classes, and practice question papers.

It is good that you have an interest in it and dedication to get it from such an early stage. Keep this spirit going and I am sure you will be able to clear the three rounds of UPSC exam.

UPSC is a difficult exam no doubt but what makes it or any national level exam difficult? Competition and Paper Pattern. Other than that it is a not a rocket science to clear an exam, many students all over India are able to do it. So can you.

A few factors on what makes it seem difficult:

Pattern of Examination

Factor No. 1 to figure out How Tough is the IAS Exam. UPSC examination in India consists of 3 levels or stages.

• The Prelims Exam
• Mains Exam
• Interview

To reach the next level, a candidate has to clear the previous level. And there is no secret that as the level changes, the level of difficulty also rises. The cut off marks in the UPSC exam is usually low. The reason being the level of competition is very high. Everyone wants to try their luck and abilities to break into the civil services. Each year there are lakhs of people appear for UPSC prelims exam and only 1/4 ^th i.e. 25% of them pass. Out of them, those who qualify the mains exam are even less up to 15%. However, the rate of success is relatively high at the interview stage.

Overall the passing percentage in the UPSC exam is less than 1%. Yes, you read it correctly it is just 1%.

Time Taken For Preparation

You can’t just do it in a month or two. It takes at least a year to prepare satisfactorily for the UPSC exams. It is not possible to cover the hefty syllabus overnight. Proper planning, dedicated preparation is a must.

So there isn't particular stream from which a candidate has to pass in 10+2 or bachelor's degree. So you have to choose a stream in 10+2 based on your interest.
