Question : The average mark obtained by a class of 60 students is 65. The average marks of half of the students were found to be 85. The average marks of the remaining students are:

Option 1: 35

Option 2: 45

Option 3: 55

Option 4: 65

Team Careers360 26th Jan, 2024

Correct Answer: 45

Solution : Given that the average mark of 60 students is 65.
Total marks = (60 × 65) = 3900
The average mark of half of the students = 85
Therefore, total marks of 30 students = 30 × 85 = 2550
Total marks of the remaining students = 3900 – 2550 = 1350
So, the Average mark of the remaining 30 students = $\frac{1350}{30}$ = 45
Hence, the correct answer is 45.

Question : If $x+\frac{1}{x}=2$, then $x^3+\frac{1}{x^3}=?$

Option 1: 1

Option 2: 8

Option 3: 2

Option 4: 0

Team Careers360 27th Jan, 2024

Correct Answer: 2

Solution : $x+\frac{1}{x}=2$
Cubing both sides, we get,
$(x+\frac{1}{x})^3=2^3$
⇒ $x^3 + \frac{1}{x^3}+3\times x\times\frac{1}{x}(x+\frac{1}{x})=8$
⇒ $x^3 + \frac{1}{x^3} + 3(x+\frac1x)=8$
⇒ $x^3 + \frac{1}{x^3} +3\times 2=8$
⇒ $x^3+\frac{1}{x^3}=8-6$
$\therefore x^3+\frac{1}{x^3}=2$
Hence, the correct answer is 2.

Question : Select the option that expresses the given sentence in indirect speech.

I said to you, "He cannot be trusted completely."

Option 1: I told you that he could not be trusted completely.

Option 2: You told me that he could not be trusted completely.

Option 3: I said you that he cannot be trusted completely.

Option 4: You told me that he cannot be trusted completely.

Solution : The correct choice is the first option.

The given sentence is in the direct speech. As per the indirect speech, the words of the speaker are reported.

Narration Conversion:

  • Said is changed to the reporting verb told in the indirect speech.
  • Cannot is changed to could not in the indirect speech, as the present tense is changed to the past tense.
  • That is used to introduce the reported clause.

Therefore, the sentence in indirect speech is: I told you that he could not be trusted completely.

Question : Comprehension:

Read the given passage and answer the questions that follow.

In the stress-ridden world, traditional pastimes that could prove therapeutic are dying for want of patronage. One such is the art of puppetry. The word “puppet” is derived from the Latin word pupa, meaning “doll” or “girl”. Puppets came into being in India in the third century A.D. Here it was honed into a theatrical art. It helped to propagate the works of saints and religious leaders, and also depict stories from epics. Later, it spread to South East Asia. The Cambodian puppeteers inspired the Thais. Java and Bali followed though it didn’t catch on in Sumatra. The Malays followed the Siamese and Japanese styles in the nineteenth century. Gradually, puppets became more sophisticated in appearance, as skilled craftsmen began to make the models. Puppeteers became trained as performers. In the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, puppet theatres became extremely popular in artistic circles. Writers like George Sands and Goethe organised their own well-prepared puppet shows to entertain their friends. Puppet shows have been mentioned in the literature by Shakespeare, Ben Johnson, and many others.

Basically, there are three kinds of puppets. Shadow puppets are made of translucent leather and coloured vegetable dyes. Buffalo, goat, or sheep skin is treated to become translucent. Limbs are loosely jointed so that they can be made to move separately. A stick is attached vertically in the middle. The movement of the stick causes general movements. But for special movements, single strings attached to the limbs are used. These leather puppets are projected on a screen, which is illuminated by a light source placed behind the puppets. The puppeteer manipulates the puppets to form moving shadows on the screen. He also speaks the parts, sings, or is accompanied by music. String puppets involve puppets that are manipulated by six strings. The performance is on a stage but the puppeteers are never seen. They wear anklets which produce the illusion that the puppets themselves are dancing. The main storyteller recites the storyline, while the puppets perform, and the dialogue and music are provided by the puppeteers. Rod or stick puppets are constructed around the main central rod. A short horizontal bar serves as the shoulders, from which the upper limbs dangle. The arms, made of cloth and stuffed with straw or paper, are jointed or manipulated with other thinner rods. These puppets can be the size of a human being. The puppeteer hides behind the puppet and manipulates it. The coordination of the limbs comes only through practice.

Puppetry is a good communication medium. Messages can be propagated in a realistic way. Puppet making and performing is good occupational therapy for convalescents and physically disabled people. Muscular coordination and manual dexterity improve with effort. However, the best use of this art is that it can provide delightful hours of fun to young and old alike.

Question:

The upper limbs of stick puppets are made of:

Option 1: straw

Option 2: leather

Option 3: paper

Option 4: cloth

Team Careers360 27th Jan, 2024

Correct Answer: cloth

Solution : The correct choice is the fourth option.

According to the last line of the second paragraph, the upper limbs of stick puppets are typically made of cloth and stuffed with straw or paper. In stick puppets, the description mentions the arms being made of cloth and stuffed with either straw or paper. This construction allows for manipulation by the puppeteer and the flexibility required for the puppet's movements.

Question : Select the most appropriate direct form of the given sentence.

The policeman told the boys that they could not park their car there.

Option 1: The policeman said to the boys, "You could not park their car there."

Option 2: The policeman said to the boys, "You cannot park your car here."

Option 3: The policeman said to the boys, "How could you park your car here?"

Option 4: The policeman told to the boys, "They could not park their car there."

Team Careers360 27th Jan, 2024

Correct Answer: The policeman said to the boys, "You cannot park your car here."

Solution : The second option is the correct answer.

Direct speech is a form of speech or writing where the actual words spoken by a person are quoted within quotation marks and attributed to the speaker.
Narration conversion:

"Can" will be changed to "could" in reported speech.

"Told" changes to "said to".

In direct speech, "you" is used for "the boys". So, "you" is replaced by "they" in indirect speech. Similarly, "their" is changed to "your".

"There" is changed to "here".

Therefore, the correct answer is: The policeman said to the boys, "You cannot park your car here."

Question : Directions: Which two signs should be interchanged to make the given equation correct?
81 * 9 + 15 ÷ 3 – 4 = 50

Option 1: + and ×

Option 2: ÷ and –

Option 3: + and ÷

Option 4: – and +

Team Careers360 27th Jan, 2024

Correct Answer: ÷ and –

Solution : Given:
15 × 18 – 6 ÷ 20 + 4 = 29

Replace the given signs in the options one by one with the original signs in the given equation.
First option: + and ×
= 15 + 18 – 6 ÷ 20 × 4
= 15 + 18 – 0.3 × 4
= 15 + 18 – 1.2
= 31.8 ≠ 29
Second option: ÷ and –
= 15 × 18 ÷ 6 – 20 + 4
= 15 × 3 – 20 + 4
= 45 – 20 + 4
= 29 = R.H.S.
Third option: + and ÷
= 15 × 18 – 6 + 20 ÷ 4
= 15 × 18 – 6 + 5
= 270 – 6 + 5
= 269 ≠ 29
Fourth option: – and +
= 15 × 18 + 6 ÷ 20 – 4
= 15 × 18 + 0.3 – 4
= 270 + 0.3 – 4
= 270.3 – 4
= 266.3 ≠ 29

So, only the second option satisfies the R.H.S. of the given equation. Hence, the second option is correct.
