I am a science student, what to do after 12th to become an IAS officer

Ayush jain 24th Aug, 2020

Hello,

First of all the minimum educational qualification required to take on the IAS exam is graduation. You have to have a degree from a recognized university to attempt the IAS exam conducted by the UPSC every year. So does that mean you start preparing for the IAS exam only after your graduation? Absolutely not! If you have just finished your schooling, and are certain of your ambition to become an IAS/IPS officer and serve the nation, our advice is, start your IAS preparation right now! Don’t wait till you turn 21 or get a degree. P reparation for after 12th is a good decision if you are inclined towards becoming a civil servant. If you start your IAS preparation early, you stand a chance to clear the IAS exam and start your civil services career early. This will take you a long way in your career and you may even become the Cabinet Secretary (which is the highest IAS post in India) depending on your caliber of course .

Here I am sharing some tips to prepare for UPSC(IAS)  after class 12th :

1.Read more about the civil services. Find out about the life of a civil servant or a diplomat. If possible, talk to an IAS officer and get to know about ground realities straight from the horse’s mouth. Ask yourself is this what you truly want? If your answer is ‘yes’, read on…

2.Take up a graduation course that involves history and polity. These subjects are of immense importance to the UPSC syllabus.

5.If you would acquire a level of mastery in these subjects, you can also opt one of them as your optional subject.

6.Also, start reading public administration, economics, etc. You can even study these subjects as your main subject, all depending on your interests and aptitude.

7.Don’t lose touch with basic maths that you learned in school. This is needed for the CSAT paper in the IAS Prelims.

8.Remember to study like an IAS aspirant and not a bunking college student.

9.Make use of your college library. Read as many relevant books as possible.

10.Inculcate the habit of reading the daily newspaper and keep abreast of the latest happenings in the country and the world.

11.Work on your interpersonal skills and communication skills. Try to develop a good personality that would help you in the IAS interview later.

12.Don’t throw away your school NCERT textbooks. These are the basic books to study for the UPSC exam.

13.Learn how to make notes and start doing the same.

14.Practice previous years IAS question papers.

Hope this will help you

Best of luck

Nimish Yadav 3rd Oct, 2020

First of all it's good to look somebody so clear about it's future . To  be an IAS officer you need to complete your bachelor degree and later that start your preparation for IAS like which subjects you are going to consider for the exam. Preparation is the only key for IAS. After Bachelor degree you are eligible for IAS exam just be update about the forms and the rules . Nothing special you need . I have completed my 11th class i want to be an IAS officer so can u show me the pathway to reach my goal

pdwords Student Expert 23rd Aug, 2020
Hello,

You're still in your eleventh standard, so there is still a long way to go for you as far as UPSC is concerned, right now your priority should be to focus on your studies and do well in the upcoming years for 10+2 level exams, a when it comes to the eligibility criteria for UPSC ,you just need to pass graduation in any discipline from a recognized University, there are no barriers in terms of coming from a specific stream or aggregate for that matter, you can apply even in the final year and you need to attain 21 years.

After 12th there are two routes which you can follow, if you are humanities student and want to do graduation in the similar field such as choosing political science, geography, economics, public administration, history may help you as UPSC tends to be more humanities oriented, you should follow this only if you're wholly and solely focused on cracking UPSC.

Second thing is to have a back up plan, many engineering, medical or even CA candidates too apply for this exam and qualify, if you have some other plans in mind you can surely go ahead with that, it's in no way going to act as impediments, the reason I say these as people from different backgrounds as I mentioned above too have qualified these exams, many have had few years of experiences in their relative field as well, so if you're a bit unsure and want to have a back up plan follow this route.

Now, coming to your preparation part, you should start your preparation in gradual manner from 1st year of graduation itself and not before that(as you're still in school and your sole focus right now should be on academics), the first thing is to get acquainted with the syllabus, take a print out and go through it daily in order to grasp what to read and skip, also remember not to segregate preparation for Prelims and Mains as nowadays UPSC also frame Prelims question based on Mains Syllabus,
read The Hindu on a daily basis, and start with NCERTs books as this will build foundation strong, and then move onwards to other standard books, you will find many toppers answer sheet online, I'll recommend you to go through these as answer writing is vital process in Mains you'll be writing answers for total of 1750 marks, this process will give you a understanding of how to present your answer in an efficient manner and score well, you can watch YouTube channels as well regarding preparation of UPSC, there are many good channels which offer lot of insights by the faculty or the toppers. If you have any other query, you can write down in the comment box below.

i completed my 2nd puc (science). i want to become IAS officer is any one plz suggest me to which course is helpful to me plz.....

bb jungkook 31st Jul, 2022
There is an increase in number of engineers clearing UPSC not because it gives an edge in the exam but due to the fact that a looott of people are going for BTech.
So don't go for BTech if you are not interested.
Go for the subject that you are actually interested in and could also potentially serve as a safe back up

iam a science student i completed my 2nd puc and got 69.18%(70%) i would like to become IAS officer plz suggest me which degree is very benifit to me to appere in UPSC examination ( santosh kumar) plz help me

Akram Khan 22nd Aug, 2020

Hi,

With any degree you can appear cor the IAS exam. As the eligibility to appear for IAS exam is candidate should have degree from any recognized university.

However if you want to select a degree course which will help you in preparation of the IAS exam also. You can select courses which have the same syllabus as that of civil services exam. Some of the such courses are -

B.A - English literature or other language (as the pre and mains syllabus includes languages also)

B.A political science

B.A history

B.A sociology

B.A geography

Bachelors in mass communication and journalism

B.Com

These are the courses which can help you. However infact there is no specific degree as the syllabus of civil services is broad whatever degree you get you will have some use of it in your preparation. So choose that degree course which you like to study. And sidwise focus in the preparation of civil services sticking to the syllabus.

Hope it helps.

which graduation course is best for ias preparation

pdwords Student Expert 22nd Aug, 2020
Hello,

There is nothing as such best course in UPSC, there are two ways in which you can appear for this exam, one is with a back up plan and another is without it, do this only when you're wholly and solely focused on cracking this exam only, as UPSC tends to be more humanities oriented ,you can choose subjects like political science, public administration, history, geography, economics etc.

Another thing is to appear with a back up plan, this year itself people with CA and electrical engineering background have cracked this exam, they have had few year of work experiences to their credit, so if you're unsure, you can take this route as well and then explore what's best for you.

UPSC doesn't discriminate among aspirants, hence it allows people from diverse backgrounds to appear for this prestigious exams, you have to remember that irrespective of what your graduation stream is eventually it's your planning and preparation that matters, the reason I say this if you look at the previous year trends of toppers ,they come from diverse backgrounds, there are many myths surrounding this exams as well for instance, people with electrical engineering having optional too have qualified the exam as well, this is because they have great knowledge of their graduation studies, although this may not be the case for every engineering aspirants, eventually it all depends on your interest when it comes to choosing optional and it's syllabus too is nothing short of graduation, hence if people chose their subject at graduation level it helps them a lot.

We may argue that humanities students are well acquainted with the syllabus comparatively to students from other stream, but then if this is the only criteria then we won't have toppers from other backgrounds, as I said eventually it's your dedication, single-minded focus works for you, and if you enjoy the process it will be less tiresome.
