Questions related to SSC CPO
Question : Comprehension:
In the following passage, some words have been deleted. Read the passage carefully and select the most appropriate option to fill in each blank.
Last week, I made the mistake of revisiting the village where I grew up. It used to be a small, friendly community with two farms and a number of old cottages around the village green. I realised very quickly that although in (1)_______ ways it appears unchanged, in reality hardly anything is the same. All the pretty cottages are there, of course, and both the traditional farmhouses. (2)_______, none of the inhabitants are country people. All of them are commuters, who leave early every morning for the nearby town. Neither of the farmhouses is attached to a farm these days; the land (3)_______ and is managed by somebody in an office somewhere who has little interest in the village (4)_______. There are a few new houses but, they have no local character. You can see the same style anywhere in the country. The whole village, (5)_______, has been tidied up so much that it looks no more picturesque than any suburban street.
Question:
Select the most appropriate option to fill in the blank number 3.
Option 1: had been sold
Option 2: sells
Option 3: sold
Option 4: has been sold
Correct Answer: has been sold
Solution : The correct choice is the third option.
Explanation: The phrase "the land has been sold" is in the present perfect tense. In the context of the passage, this tense is suitable because it conveys a connection between a past action (the sale of the land) and the present state (the land being managed by somebody in an office). The present perfect tense indicates relevance to the current situation.
So, the complete sentence would be: "Neither of the farmhouses is attached to a farm these days; the landhas been soldand is managed by somebody in an office somewhere who has little interest in the village."
Question : E, F, G, and H are four points lying on the circumference of a circle to make a cyclic quadrilateral. If $\angle {FGH}=57^{\circ}$, then what will be the measure of the $\angle {HEF}$?
Option 1: $33^{\circ}$
Option 2: $123^{\circ}$
Option 3: $93^{\circ}$
Option 4: $143^{\circ}$
Correct Answer: $123^{\circ}$
Solution :
E, F, G, and H form a cyclic quadrilateral.
$\angle {FGH}=57^{\circ}$
In a cyclic quadrilateral, the sum of opposite angles is 180$^\circ$.
So, $\angle {FGH} + \angle {HEF} = 180^\circ$
⇒ $57^{\circ} + \angle {HEF} = 180^\circ$
⇒ $\angle {HEF} = 180^\circ- 57^{\circ} = 123^\circ$
Hence, the correct answer is $123^\circ$.
Question : Wilting of plants occurs due to excessive :
Option 1: respiration
Option 2: guttation
Option 3: absorption
Option 4: transpiration
Correct Answer: transpiration
Solution : The correct option istranspiration.
Plant wilting is generally caused by excessive transpiration. Transpiration is the mechanism by which plants remove water vapour through tiny pores called stomata in their leaves. When transpiration rates surpass the plant's ability to absorb water from the soil via its roots, turgidity (the hardness of plant cells) is lost, resulting in wilting, in which the leaves and stems become limp and droop.
