About NDA 2018

National Defence Academy (NDA) and Naval Academy (NA) examination is conducted by Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) for the admission to Navy, Air Force and Army. NDA/NA is conducted twice a year in April and September. NDA I is conducted in April while NDA 2 is held in September. The notification of NDA 2 exam was released on June 6 along with the application form. NDA 2 application form was filled from June 6 to July 2, 2018.  As per the eligibility criteria only male candidates who are unmarried and born not earlier than January 2, 2000 and not later than January 1, 2003 can fill the application form. The exam is conducted in two stages – written and Service Selection Board (SSB) Interview. NDA 2 written exam was  conducted on September 9, 2018. The result has been announced on November 30, 2018. As many as 6931 candidates have qualified the written exam of NDA. UPSC has announced 383 vacancies for NDA 2 exam.

NDA Eligibility Criteria 

To be eligible for NDA 2 exam, candidates must check the eligibility criteria which include educational qualification, physical standards, marital status, nationality and age limit. 

 Educational Qualification for NDA/NA:








Candidates applying for Army Wing of National Defence Academy should be 12th pass or 10+2 pattern of School Education or equivalent examination             


Air Force, Navy and Cadet Entry Scheme at the Indian Naval Academy


Candidates applying Air Force and Naval Wings  of National Defence Academy and for the 10+2 Cadet Entry Scheme at  the Indian Naval Academy must be 12th or equivalent examination   with Physics and Mathematics


Candidate applying for NDA 2 exam must be
i. an Indian, or
ii. a subject of Nepal, or
iii. a subject of Bhutan, or
iv. Indian origin migrants who have permanently settled in India  from East African Countries of Kenya, Uganda, Ethiopia or Vietnam, Burma, the United Republic of Tanzania, Pakistan, Malawi, Zaire, Sri Lanka, Zambia, or
v. a Tibetan refugee who came to settle permanently in India before January 1, 1962.
Age limit
Candidates must be between 16.5 to 19.5 years born not earlier than January 2, 2002 and later than January 1, 2003.

Marital status

Only unmarried male candidates can apply NDA 2 exam.

NDA Application Form 2018

NDA 2 online application form was available from June 6 to July 2, 2018. The application was filled in two parts. Part 1 of registration includes filling up of candidate’s basic details, choosing the branch, verification of details and registration id generation. Part 2 of application form includes fee payment, exam centre selection and uploading of signature and photograph.

NDA Part 1 – Registration    

Part 1 of NDA registration was divided into four stages. In stage 1 candidates had to fill the basic details including name, gender, father’s and mother’s name, community, nationality, fee remission, marital status, address etc. In Stage 2, candidates had to choose the branch as per their preference like Navy, Army and Air force.Candidates from Military/Sainik School or Son of NCO/JCO/Other Rank Officer had to enter details asked in the application form. In stage 3, candidates must verify the details filled and if required they can make changes by clicking on ‘Update’ button.After filling all the credentials candidates were able to see the registration id, other details and print the pay-in-slip to pay the application fees offline.

NDA Part 2 – Registration 

In Part 2 of registration, candidates had to select the mode of payment through online or offline mode. The application fee was Rs. 100 for General category and OBC candidates while SC, ST and Sons of NCOs, JCOs ORs are exempted from fee payment. Candidates also had to select exam centres from the prescribed list of centres by UPSC and Upload the scanned signature and photograph. The final stage candidates were asked to read the declaration and click on “I have read Declaration & Agree” to finally submit NDA 2 application form and its print out.

NDA  Preparation Tips 

To start the preparation of NDA exam candidates must know the exam pattern, syllabus and tips to prepare. Candidates must know the strategies to crack NDA exam, benefits of solving previous years’ question papers and day to day practice of written exam.  To score good marks candidates must focus on the weak areas and practice it on daily basis. It is important for the candidates appearing in NDA exam that they have clear ideas about the basic concepts of Mathematics. 

NDA Exam Pattern

As per NDA exam pattern, the written exam had two papers - General Ability Test (GAT) and Mathematics. The exam was conducted for 2 ½ hours separately.  General Ability Test (GAT) comprised of 600 marks while Mathematics carried 300 marks. For each correct answer in GAT and Mathematics, candidate had scores as per the prescribed marking scheme. While for each wrong/incorrect response in both papers one third (1/3) was deducted. The candidates who have qualified the written exam are eligible to appear for SSB Interview which carries 900 marks.

NDA Admit card

The admit card of NDA 2 written exam is available online from August 20, 2018 to the day of examination. Candidateshave to carry admit card and photo-identity proof on the day of examination. In order to download NDA admit card,candidates have to enter either their registration id or roll number.

NDA Result 

Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) releases the result separately for written exam and final. The result of NDA written exam has been on November 30, 2018. Candidates who have secured the minimum qualifying marks as prescribed by UPSC are eligible to appear for SSB interview.

Final Result

NDA 2 final result is expected to be released in May 2019. The final result of NDA exam is calculated out of 1800 marking including the total marks of written and SSB interview. The final result of NDA will have combined marks scored by the candidate in written and SSB interview after which all India merit list is prepared. Based on the all India merit list released by UPSC final allocation is done to Naval Academy and  National Defence Academy. 

NDA  Answer Key

Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) will release the official answer key of NDA. Candidates can check number of correct and incorrect answers through the official answer key which can help them calculate their probable score. Some coaching institutes also release the answer key within few hours of NDA written exam where candidates can download and check their answers. 

NDA Cutoff 

Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) releases cutoff marks written and final marks. The cutoff is the minimum qualifying marks obtained by the candidates. Candidates have to score the overall as well as the sectional cutoff to be eligible for the next stage of the exam which will be fixed by UPSC.
