About NDA 2019

National Defence Academy (NDA) and Naval Academy (NA) examination is conducted by Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) for the admission to Navy, Air Force and Army. NDA/NA is conducted twice a year in April and September. NDA I is conducted in April while NDA 2 is held in November. The notification of NDA 2 will be released along with the application form on August 7, 2019. NDA 2 application form will be filled till September 3, 2019. The Commission will also release the facility to withdraw application form for the candidates who will register successfully. Candidates who are between 16.5 to 19.5 years of age can apply for NDA 2 exam. The selection process of NDA exam comprises two stages – written and Service Selection Board (SSB) Interview. NDA 1 written exam is scheduled to be held on November 17,  2019.

To be eligible for NDA 2 exam, candidates must check the eligibility criteria which include educational qualification, physical standards, marital status, nationality and age limit. 

 Educational Qualification for NDA/NA:








Candidates applying for Army Wing of National Defence Academy should be 12th pass or 10+2 pattern of School Education or equivalent examination             


Air Force, Navy and Cadet Entry Scheme at the Indian Naval Academy


Candidates applying Air Force and Naval Wings  of National Defence Academy and for the 10+2 Cadet Entry Scheme at  the Indian Naval Academy must be 12th or equivalent examination   with Physics and Mathematics


Candidate applying for NDA 2 exam must be
i. an Indian, or
ii. a subject of Nepal, or
iii. a subject of Bhutan, or
iv. Indian origin migrants who have permanently settled in India from East African Countries of Kenya, Uganda, Ethiopia or Vietnam, Burma, the United Republic of Tanzania, Pakistan, Malawi, Zaire, Sri Lanka, Zambia, or
v. a Tibetan refugee who came to settle permanently in India before January 1, 1962.
Age limit
Candidates must be between 16.5 to 19.5 years of age.

Marital status

Only unmarried male candidates can apply NDA 2 exam.

NDA application form will be available from August 7, 2019. The last day to fill the application form is September 3, 2019. The application can be filled in two parts. Part 1 of registration includes filling up of candidate’s basic details, choosing the branch, verification of details and registration id generation. Part 2 of the application form includes fee payment, exam centre selection and uploading of signature and photograph.

NDA Part 1– Registration    

Part 2 of NDA registration is divided into four stages. In stage 1 candidates have to fill the basic details including name, gender, father’s and mother’s name, community, nationality, fee remission, marital status, address etc. In Stage 2, candidates have to choose the branch as per their preference like Navy, Army and Air force. Candidates from Military/Sainik School or Son of NCO/JCO/Other Rank Officer have to enter details asked in the application form. In stage 3, candidates must verify the details filled and if required they can make changes by clicking on ‘Update’ button. After filling all the credentials candidates are able to see the registration id, other details and print the pay-in-slip to pay the application fees offline.

NDA Part 2 – Registration 

In Part 2 of registration, candidates have to select the mode of payment through online or offline mode. The application fee will be Rs. 100 for General category and OBC candidates while SC, ST and Sons of NCOs, JCOs ORs are exempted from fee payment. Candidates also have to select exam centres from the prescribed list of centres by UPSC and Upload the scanned signature and photograph. The final stage candidates are asked to read the declaration and click on “I have read Declaration & Agree” to finally submit NDA 1 application form and its print out.

NDA  Preparation Tips 

To start the preparation of NDA exam candidates must know the exam pattern, syllabus and tips to prepare. Candidates must know the strategies to crack NDA exam, benefits of solving previous years’ question papers and day to day practice of written exam.  To score good marks candidates must focus on the weak areas and practice it on daily basis. It is important for the candidates appearing in NDA exam that they have clear ideas about the basic concepts of Mathematics. 

NDA 2019 Exam Pattern

NDA Paper 1

As per NDA exam pattern, there are two papers for NDA written exam -  Mathematics and General Ability Test (GAT).  The Mathematics paper carries 300 marks where questions will be asked from various topics. For each wrong answer, 1/3 marks will be deducted.  The exam will be conducted for 2 hours 30 minutes.

NDA Paper 2

The paper of NDA written exam comprises General Ability Test (GAT). This paper will be held separately for 600 marks. Candidates will be given 2 and 1/2 hours to complete the exam. As per the marking scheme, 1/3 marks will be deducted for each wrong answer. There are two parts in GAT - Part A (English) and Part B (General Knowledge). Further, Part B is divided into 5 sections - Physics, Chemistry, General Science, History, Freedom Movement etc, Geography and Current Events.

NDA Admit card

The admit card of NDA 2 written exam will be available online in September 2019. Candidates will be able to download the admit card till the day of examination. In order to download NDA admit card, candidates have to enter either their registration id or roll number. Candidates will have to carry admit card and photo-identity proof on the day of examination.

NDA  Answer Key

Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) will release the official answer key of NDA. Candidates can check number of correct and incorrect answers through the official answer key which can help them calculate their probable score. Some coaching institutes also release the answer key within few hours of NDA written exam where candidates can download and check their answers. 

NDA Result 

Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) releases the result separately for written exam and final. The result of NDA written exam will be announced in January 2020. Candidates who will secure the minimum qualifying marks as prescribed by UPSC will be eligible to appear for SSB interview.

Final Result

NDA 2 final result is expected to be released in March 2020. The final result of NDA exam is calculated out of 1800 marking including the total marks of written and SSB interview. The final result of NDA will have combined marks scored by the candidate in written and SSB interview after which all India merit list is prepared. Based on the all India merit list released by UPSC final allocation is done to Naval Academy and  National Defence Academy. 

NDA Cutoff 

Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) releases cutoff marks written and final marks. The cutoff is the minimum qualifying marks obtained by the candidates. Candidates have to score the overall as well as the sectional cutoff to be eligible for the next stage of the exam which will be fixed by UPSC.
